BOARD GAME PRICE WAR
IN TORONTO
(HTP) What's happening in the Toronto board-game market? Why is Hairy
Tarantula offering 35% discounts every Tuesday? We decided to talk to
owner and operator Leon Emmett, who shared his views about the
encroachment of online resellers into what has traditionally been a
"brick-and-mortar" world of retail.
"We've used the same mark-up we always have since we began to sell
gaming in 1995 or 96, and our aim has been to basically stock
everything, and to provide our customers with knowledgeable assistance
navigating that enormous variety of product. Since then, our expertise
has to a larger degree been replaced with an online search engine, and
our mark-up has been increasingly discounted away in competing with
online resellers - not the least of which is Amazon (perhaps gunning for
the game store next, since they wiped many of the book shops off the map
years ago. For years our service was the counterbalance to the cheap
warehouse-webcart apparatus, but now it seems like fewer people can
afford to support their "friendly local game shop" by paying more for
something than necessary, and when enough customers balk at the
difference of a measly dollar, I notice. So now all of our board games
are 30% off, and on Tuesdays they're 35% off; I've been doing research
and math, and this unsustainable formula is the answer."
This reporter admits to frequenting the Hairy Tarantula's Yonge and
Steeles location from time to time, and the thought of it closing was
alarming to me in a way I had never suspected I could be alarmed. I am
please to tell you that Mr. Emmett was very sage as he assured me that
there were plenty of other lines of product that would support the
HairyT while the choppy weather of unsustainable board game discounts
blew its course. Then he began a long meandering diatribe about how
most people had no cohesive pictures of reality that bore an even
passing resemblance to the state of the world in truth, and how as a
result the year 2012 was likely to witness two cresting waves of
biblical proportion sweep across the world in what will be both horrific
and miraculous days. When I tried to end our interview he blocked the
door and raised his voice as he continued to urge me to repent of my
sins, which included, he said, an obvious predeliction for distraction
over self-improvement or assisting those less fortunate. I tried to
look like I was listening in the hopes he would let me leave, but he
noticed me staring at the spit on his beard in disbelief, and began
yelling about the worst of my sins being the slothful approach to the
truth in my reporting, and how I was damn-well nearly as bad as the
black-hearted fiends who purposely tell the most outrageous lies. Now
I'm just telling you what happened because I am afraid he will come to
my house if he reads anything different than what I remember. |
